Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback has been used since the 1970s and was originally developed to help reduce seizures by training sensorimotor rhythms (SMRs) which are brain waves connected to movement, attention, and focus.

Today, decades of research support neurofeedback as an effective, evidence-based approach for concerns such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, irritability, and other mental health conditions.

🧠 Understanding Brain Waves

Different brain wave patterns are associated with different symptoms:

  • Excess theta waves are commonly linked to daydreaming, distractibility, and difficulty focusing (often seen in ADHD)
  • Excess beta waves are associated with anxiety, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating

In individuals with ADHD, elevated theta and beta activity are common patterns. Research shows that neurofeedback training can help regulate these brain waves and significantly reduce symptoms comparable to stimulant medications.

⚙️ How Neurofeedback Works

At New Pathways Counseling, we use BrainMaster technology to monitor brain activity in real time during sessions.

During treatment:

  • You or your child watches a favorite movie or video
  • Sensors monitor brain wave activity
  • When the brain moves into the targeted, healthier range, the screen brightens and audio is relayed simultaneously for positive feedback
  • Over time, the brain learns to maintain more balanced and regulated patterns naturally

Neurofeedback is safe, non-invasive, medication-free, and often enjoyable for both children and adults.

📈 Our Treatment Approach

We use Multivariate Coherence (MVC) Training to improve communication, regulation, and connectivity within the brain.

Treatment is personalized and based on a Brain Map (QEEG) completed and interpreted by Dr. Coben, Neuropsychologist.

  • Each MVC protocol includes 15 sessions per brain map
  • For optimal results, we typically recommend at least two brain maps
